sox and effects.

Hi all,
Could someone tell me why I can't get sox to apply it's effects properly?
I want to try different effects but whenever I try to add an echo or
reverb, I don't seem to be able to hear it.
am I not doing something correctly?
the command line I've been using is,
play hello.wav reverb 1.0 0.5 0.5 0.75 or something to that effect.
thanks in advance and yes I've read the man pages.
