Syntax for Dec-Talk Express and Speakup

Hi all.
I just hooked a dectalk express to com1 on my other machine, but when I
type "linux speakup_synth=dectlk" linux just starts up with no speech.
How do I tell it the dectalk is on com1?  I've probably seen it before,
but I've always used an internal doubletalk and this is the first time
I've tried
 it with a serial synthesizer.  BTW, it is compiled in my kernel as well.
