Why am I getting this strange behavior?

It appears that something is opening files on your system and not closing them.
file-max referrs to the number of files the kernel has open...
you are running out of file handles. Something is eating them;
8192 is a lot of files to have open. My systems
stay up for weeks without seeing this error.
