There is a "-raw" option you can pass to pdftotext which sometimes
produces a more legible file than the default mode.  It works especially
well if the original has columns of text.  Other times, it makes a
complete mess of the file, but it's worth a try if you are having trouble
extracting the text out of a PDF file.
