partitioning

You can satisfy yourself more easily, I think.
If you select /dev/hda, you will then see what, if any, partitions exist
on that disk. The installer will not let you casually wipe out existing
data. If you see vfat or fat partitions that look suspiciously like your
Windows drive, and you should know it's approximate file size, then
you'll know that's the wrong choice.
Conversely, if you select /dev/hde and then see it's completely devoid
of data, your OK to go with that disk.
Is it the case that both disks have data and you can't tell between
them from the partitioning tool's data display? Then, why not look at
the bytesize of each? Compare those numbers to data you get in My
Computer.
