Compile custom kernel

Hi.
I'm installing debian and want a custom kernel as the machine I'm
installing it on is rather limited.
The problem is that I do not have root access on the computer I'm going to
compile the kernel on. I downloaded kernel 2.2.19 and the latest speakup
from the ftp site.
When I run the ./install from the speakup-1.00 folder I got errors related
to the permissions of the source.
So I edited that script and changed the references to my source tree in my
home directory.
It still is trying to patch up the kernel in /usr/src/linux, what other
files do I need to edit to direct the scripts for installation to my
particular source tree location?
thanks,
Patrick
