latest kernel

The latest seems to be 2.4.9.
You should get the .tar.bz2 files since they're smaller and will download faster.
So, in this case, the file you want is
linux-2.4.9.tar.bz2
. Then, put this into /usr/src,
make sure no other directory with the name of linux exists there,
and do:
tar yxpf linux-2.4.9.tar.bz2
to decompress the kernel tree into /usr/src/linux/
. You then can delete the .tar.bz2 file if you
don't want it anymore.
