You were asking about make menuconfig.  My recommendation was for make
menuconfig and only make menuconfig.  It seems obvious to me that if
you turn off the speech output to get better tracking then you best
know how to use the say line feature to read what is on the line you
are tracking.

I don't recommend necessarily turning off speech output for lynx or
pine or any other packages.  I do however recommend that you and any
one else learn how to use the package before compiling a kernel.  It
isn't rocket science.
