If you read the gpl you will see that people can sell products that are
licensed under it.  What is required is that your name be kept intact as
the original author, it's republished under the gpl, and the source is
available.  I am not certain if it is required for them to publish what
they've changed about it but that seems like it would be important.  It
also seems that you can branch off and make your own code tree but if you
don't branch then you are required to submit your changes back to the
author.  Someone who knows more about this then me should comment here.  
One thing I know is that the gpl has provided us with the tools that most
of us around here love and would never live with out.  The gpl gives us
the right of ownership of a peace of software.  I don't know of any other
license that does this.  Most grant the right to use.  It's unfortunate
that most people don't care to have the 4 freedoms that freesoftware
grants us.  I don't care about open source.  You can take your open source
and stick it where the sun don't shine.  I don't want the bloody source.  
I want the right to do good things for all people with that source.  This
is what the gpl does for freesoftware.
