ata100 again

Yes.  when you compiled it did you use the original config for that ata
style kernel?  Perhaps you can go and edit that config file and manually
take out stuff that you don't definitely don't need.  For example take
out usb ifyou don't have a usb and take out sound ifyou don'thave that.
