Off Topic - remote login to linux

Just a quick question: does anyone know why less keeps breaking output in
odd places and displaying what jfw calls "inverted exclamation" symbols.
Happens when displaying man pages. I've tried processing the raw page with
various filters and such, and tried various options on the less command
itself, but no go. I'm wondering if it is actually hyphenation characters
being displayed weirdly. I briefly looked at nroff and troff and tried to
figure out how to turn off hyphenation altogether, but this stuff just
jystifies me. Lots of stuff about hyphenation, but no way to turn it off!
Any help greatly appreciated.
