(OT) Speak Freely program instllation help needed

Hi Listers.
Today I dowonloaded what I think is the current version of the Speak
Freely program and unpacked the tarball with no problem.  The problem I am
having is understanding the make file.
I am running Slackware 7.1 with an SB16 sound card.
When I try and run make it says something about commands before first
target.
How do I do this?
