I'm in a jam with intel ethernet card.

Hi all.
I have a problem with slackware not being able to detect my intel ethernet nic.
I've tryed the various modules like eexpress and eepro and eepro100 but I still get no joy in detecting my card.
I've also tryed the various io addresses they suggest in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/net-modules.txt but still get no joy.
is there a way I can detect and use my card?
this is beginning to give me a headache! <grin>
