transport not announcing anything past a dash

I didn't see this brought up before so this is why I'm asking.  I'm using
the transport with speakup and if I'm reviewing the screen and there is a
line that contains dashes the transport just announces dash.  It does not
announce any letter or words after the dash.  For example if I do a ls -l
on a directory instead of hearing something like -rwxr-x--x blah blah all
I hear is dash dash dash.  If I type a command name followed by a --help
such as date --help I hear the parameters just spoken as  dash instead of
dash h for this or dash y for that.

Anything I can do to fix this?  I know it has to be with the transport
because it does not happen with the speakout.
