How do I use ins-star?

When you hit ins-* your console will make a double raising beep
sound.  You then type two digits followed by 'x' or 'y' which then
position your reading cursor at the position you gave, so for example:

ins-* bleep bleep
18x

And look ma, my reading cursor is at position 18.
