Not sure why a discussion of windows screen readers is here, but let me
give you a solution for your self-activating combo boxes. Just hit
alt-down arrow when your on the box and it'l keep it from activating. This
is piss-poor web design in any case and most sighted users don't much like
it either. I am sure that key stroke I mention works under 3.1, but can't
recall now.
