Passing chars to the synth.

Hi guys. I'm using the cvs version of speakup and I just compiled kernel 2.4.0 and when I pass arguements to the /proc file system like the rate value I like and pitch and key_echo values the settings get spoken out hte synth.
Am using the litetalk if this helps. I know there was a little discussion about this on the list a couple days ago, but I skipped over it not realizing I'd need ot fall back on it.
