Do you know what NIC stands for? Network interface card. Just the card.
Not 2 cards and a bit of wire, just the card. So Kirk is right - you'd get
2 bits of trash (or one at least) if you had half a NIC.
Certainly one NIC is better than none. It's handy to have a network card
even if you don't yet have a network, as there are times when the
opportunity arises to connect to one. And of course, there's cable and
DSL.
