Well I am a live and with mail for those who noticed my absence!
Shaun!
You need to make sure you are getting the text.gz or color.gz files from
the /pub/speakup/disks/slackware/slackware-7.1/rootdsks/ directory. You
need to make sure that your ftp client is retrieving them in binary
form. It may be easier just to use the DOS ftp client. Just type bin
after you have logged in and this should be good for you.
