Installing Debian

Hi

How do I establish the kernel number?  What has to be done to fix the files?
I'd like to give Debian a go as my disks will be arriving shortly.

Hmm, do me a favor and tell me what kernel version is on the rescue disks, I
think its 2.2.18, but I don't remember.
