ppp slow on old machine

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help. I've just setup Linux on a 80486 (100 MHz) machine. It has 16 Mb of physical RAM and 128 Mb on a swap partition. It also has a 14.4 baud modem which communicates with the box at 115200 kbps. Running ppp on this box is *very slow*. From the time that I type ppp-go and get the shell prompt to the time the modem picks up the hone is about 30 seconds. From the time the speaker is shut off to the time it says serial connection established is about 1 min. From the time it says sending lcp config-requeststo the time it hangs up is about 20 sec. What's going on? Is it not enough RAM, a too slow CPU? I'm fairly sure it's not the modem, as I've been able to connect with it before on another machine running windows. I've attached the output of the transaction with the debug feature enabled. Thanks for any hhelp in advance.
Greg
