speakup compile error

Hello.  I'm trying to build speakup into 2.2.18 kernel.  I brought down
the latest cvs patch.  I get the following messages:
drivers/char/char.o: In function `vt_ioctl':
drivers/char/char.o(.text+0x12e96): undefined reference to `do_spk_ioctl'
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1

Any suggestions welcome.
