speakup patch

hi all,
i read the instructions on how to patch
speakup but i get errors when i compile the kernel.
the error that i get is loadkeys not found.
the kernel version is 2.2.16 and the speakup patch is
version speakup-0.09-v2.2-patch
it appears to patch fine,
then i do a make mrproper
then i do a make config,
then i do a make dep,
then i do a make bzImage,
ok half way through the compile i get loadkeys not found,
also error in defkeymap.c.
