What version of speakup should I be looking for to get these latest changes?
What I have is 0.09 from a boot disk I recently got ( late last month). I
did untar a distribution from the same time period to get the speakout
config utility but haven't applied the patch yet.

Kirk,
I have compiled two new kernels, both 2.2.17, one using the Doubletalk LT
and the other using the Dectalk Express and in both cases the backspace
key works correctly! That is, it speaks the letter being backed over
and only says "space" if the char being backed over is a space. Good job!
