There are a number of ICQ-compatible clients for linux.  I use micq which
seems to have the best reputation.  It's extremely speech friendly and no
hassle to install and use.  Documentation is a little light on but most of
its functions can be figured out.

You can download micq from

The latest version is 0.44 which looks like it just came out (as in
yesterday).  Guess what I'm off to do next.
