Hello all

Thanks for the responses I received. It turned out I initially had the
right diskette made. The trouble was that I needed to turn off my dectalk
express and then back on. I guess jfw sets something which doesn't allow
speakup to work. Probably something with the indexing.

I am very excited to find this effort. during the past few years, I have
been working half-heartedly on a patch set to the linux console driver to
provide speech. I never got past some problems with interrupt timing and
kernel buffering.

I have been running linux along with other flavors of unix since the early
80's. The linux project can do nothing but good for all those who support
it.

My home linux box is configured to use a serial console. I have an old 386
machine I use as a talking terminal. It can connect to the console via a
serial cable (with kermit); or, via the network (with ncsa telnet).
Although, this works, I have high hopes for speakup. I would very much like
to especially put linux with speakup on my laptop for obvious reasons.

Hey Brent:

I don't know if linux can be installed over ppp or not. However, I would
say no. The reason for this is that a ppp link is relatively slow. When I
downloaded the rredhat 6.2 distribution, it took 2 days. Given this, I
think I would spend the $10 or so and buy a CD.

Terry

Can it be installed over ppp? I was thinking about trying it on my laptop,
and I don't have any networks around that I can hook my own machine to.
