Chris,
Before you copy your kernel to disk, you can run the rdev command to set
the root filesystem.  For example,
rdev bzImage /dev/hdb1
If you run rdev bzImage (with no options)
it tells you what root filesystem is currently assigned.
Then you stick a formatted floppy in your drive and type:
cp bzImage /dev/fd0
