Bruce.  Is it posible for you to get on the reflector so that we can ask
you some questions.  You will need a copy of
speakfreely.  http://www.speakfreely.org

Then connect to lwl.braille.uwo.ca:4074 Then we should be able to discus
this with you.  A little baffled about your problem but I am sure that one
of us can help get you up and running.  One of us may need to compile you
a custom kernel, posibly with the cvs version of speakup.  Drop on by the
reflector when you can.
