adventures with 2.2.18 and alsa

Chuck!  Don't give up on 2.2.18 just yet.

Blow away your 2.2.18 modules tree and try compiling from scratch again
this time making sure you build sound support as a module.  Then build the
alsadrivers with ./configure --with-cards=emu10k1.  I think that you may
have had some version problems with the modules in the 2.2.18 tree.  Only
a guess however.  I have seen this behavior a few times in the
past.  Never really sure what caused it.  But blowing things away and
starting over made things work ok!
