alsa broken after 2.2.18 upgrade

Jim,
Thanks for the response... I tried your procedure with the same error
message resulting. My card is an sblive so I selected "emu10k1" which I
believe is what I needed to do.
I guess I will go get some coffee, and think about taking up photography
or something...
