More Debian fun

Buddy, what kind of cdrom do you have in the machine?  Do you have
anything connected to the parallel port?  I was getting similar kinds of
problems on my laptop, and discovered that I had a parallel cable that
was only partially connected.  If you can give me more specifics on the
kind of disk controller you have, maybe there is some other driver I
need to include in the kernel.
